CASA’s mission is to educate partnership members
and the Winthrop community about substance
abuse and the impact it has on the
lives of youth and other residents.
The Dream of a youth center for our community will soon be a reality. Together Pat Milano of CASA and Cathy DelVento of Friends of 21st Century Learning Center signed a three year lease for the building on the Putnham Street formally Kathy's Place fitness center.
The center will offer space for homework, socializing, fitness activities all of which will be planned and monitored by the staff. Certified teachers will be available to assist students with homework. Also a computer center, game room and a large screen television.
The center is geared for students ages 8 -15. Boys and girls that are ages 12 - 15 may use the center after school and also 6-8 pm Monday - Thursday. Fridays and Saturdays the center will remain open till 10:00pm. and Sundays until 8:00pm.
Students ages 8-11 must register with the 21st Century Community Learning Center after school program in order to use the youth center. More

The CASA coalition aims to help improve the quality of life for all Winthrop residents and provide a safer environment for children and youth by addressing issues of substance abuse through the use of substance abuse prevention strategies. CASA is committed to identifying and providing resources within the community to help families deal with substance abuse as a complex social and health problem.
What keeps children alcohol-free?
Children who have strong communication with their parents are less likely to drink.
Children whose parents set clear rules and expectations are less likely to use alcohol.
Children whose parents discipline them when they break the rules are also less likely to use alcohol.
